Timken commissions MEERgauge® system

Timken from Canton, Ohio, USA, has successfully commissioned the MEERgauge® laser-based precision measuring system supplied by SMS Meer, Germany. The system displays the complete product cross-section on the basis of the light section method. With the new measurement technology, Timken can reduce tolerance deviations fully automatically during the rolling process on SBQ-bars with diameters from 25 to 127 millimeters.

“The results produced by the MEERgauge® made a lasting impression on us. We can further improve our already very good rolling tolerances, particularly with the single-pass system running under load,” says Perry Petrullo, Plant Manager at Timken.

Up to 500 measurement points around the cross-section are recorded simultaneously in a coordinate system displaying the actual cross-sectional form. This forms the basis for fine adjustments of the intended finished dimension tolerances, if necessary. Fluctuations in cross-section, temperature or steel grade of the ingoing material are automatically compensated.

MEERgauge® allows fully automatic hydraulic adjustment under load of the three-roll PSM® (Precision Sizing Mill), independently of the operating personnel.

MEERgauge® was completely installed and integrated into the existing plant control system in just one week.
