Winding of high-strength grades with strip widths of up to 2,000 mm. SMS Siemag modernizes coiler at Wuhan Iron & Steel
12.02.2014, 15:40Wuhan Iron & Steel, China, has placed an order with SMS Siemag, Germany, to modernize a coiler in the Hot Strip Mill No. 2. The aim of the modernization is to enable the Coiler No. 3 to wind hot strip with a higher strength and in greater thicknesses.
The Hot Strip Mill No. 2 of Wuhan Iron & Steel (WISCO), supplied by SMS Siemag, commenced operation in 2003 and was the first hot strip mill in China with a strip width of more than 2,000 millimeters. With this modernization, Wisco intends to expand the range of pro-ducts in the area of high-strength steels and tube grades. In spring 2015, following the revamp of the coiler, WISCO will, for example, be able to wind tube grades of strength class X100 up to a thickness of 20 millimeters.
The modernization by SMS Siemag comprises the technological adaptation of Coiler No. 3 to the new demands and the installation of new core components. These include a new coiler mandrel, a new mandrel gear unit, the pinch roll unit and new hydraulic valve stands. A new hydraulically controlled hold-down roll ensures reliable guiding of the strip head end to the coiler mandrel and enables the build-up of strip tension for tightly wound coils. For reliable discharge and safe processing of the coils, the coiler will receive a further-developed coil transfer car and a patented coil hold-down device.
SMS Siemag will be extending the existing automation system for the coiling of high-strength steels and will install new control desks and HMI (Human Machine Interface) operator screens. For the moderni-zation of Coiler No. 3, SMS Siemag will also be supplying the com-plete drive package (converter and motor) for the coiler mandrel and for the pinch roll unit.
