Modernization contract: New electrical and automation systems to increase production and improve final product quality.

Shandong Taishan Steel Group Co.,Ltd., China, awarded SMS Siemag, Germany, the order to upgrade the automation system of its 1,800-mm Steckel mill as part of a capacity increase. The scope of supply includes the worldwide proven CVC® plus bending and shifting system with Profile, Contour and Flatness Control (PCFC) systems to ensure good dimensional accuracy of the strip. Additionally, SMS Siemag will supply the patented Steckel loopers for optimal strip tension and mass flow control. With this modernization project at its Laiwu location in the Chinese province of Shandong, Shandong Taishan intends to increase its production of hot wide strip and extend the product range towards higher grades.

At present, the capacity of the Steckel rolling mill is 600,000 tpy. The revamping measures to be implemented by SMS Siemag will prepare the ground for the planned capacity increase to 1,800,000 tpy. The Steckel mill is used to produce hot-rolled stainless and carbon steel strips for use in the automotive, shipbuilding and household appliances industries.

SMS Siemag will supply the X-Pact® electrical and automation systems, including the control systems and process models, as well as key mechanical components. SMS Siemag will also be responsible for supervising the installation and commissioning. A new HMI system on the basis of SMS Siemag-developed control pulpits will enable an ergonomic operating process. The supply package will also include medium-voltage converter systems for the main drives of three new finishing stands and low-voltage converter systems for the main drive of the new coiler No. 2. The existing laminar cooling section will be replaced by a new reinforced laminar cooling system with a higher specific water volume and optimized water distribution across the strip width.

The Shandong Taishan Steel Group operates several hot and cold rolling mills in China, which produce strip and sheet in stainless and carbon steel grades.
