Anode Sealing Station

Primary aluminium smelters increasingly seek to reduce volt-drop in the sealed anode. Lower volt-drop means greater efficiency and improved energy use.

VHE of Iceland is able to supply a complete range of equipment to ensure the lowest possible electrical resistance in the sealed anode and providing assured mechanical strength.

A fully customised installation can be designed to meet all requirements; typically this would include an anode handling conveyor, anode hole cleaner and heater / drier, stub graphiting system, an anode rod inserter and stub centering mechanism, anode centering, and a molten iron casting machine. The whole system is installed under the existing overhead power and free or monorail conveyor. Optionally, a rod resistance measuring system is available to automatically measure the volt-drop over the stub repair welds, bi-metal joint and cast iron seals.

The VHE semi-automatic casting machine is designed to relieve the operator of the repetitive parts of this task, whilst continuing to provide manual control over the potentially hazardous operation of pouring molten metal.

The machine runs on rail tracks. The ladle is lifted up two vertically mounted curved guide-rails, and is tilted to the pouring position with absolute stability. The operator, sitting in an air-conditioned cab attached to the machine, has an unobstructed view of the casting operation from a position which remains constant relative to the pouring spout.

Automation is provided by the use of encoders and frequency controlled drives. The operator is able to index the machine in various positions, “memorising” the pouring cycle for automatic repetition.
