Siemens modernizes dedusting plant in Turkish steelworks

26.06.2013, 16:14

• Emissions reduced to European standards

Cleaning capacity of up to 1,500,000 standard cubic meters per hour

Turkish steel producer Diler Demir Çelik End.Ve Tic. A. Ş. (Diler) has awarded Siemens Metals Technologies an order to modernize the dedusting plant at the company's finger-shaft furnace in the Dilovası steelworks. The project aims to consolidate the compliance of the plant’s emission levels with European standards on a sustainable basis. The modernized dedusting plant is due to come on stream at the end of 2013.

Diler operates an electric steel plant, a billet casting plant and two bar mills in Dilovası, in the Kocaeli province. The production facilities are located in a densely populated area on the edge of Greater Istanbul and can produce around 1.5 million metric tons of steel bars per year. With a diameter of 6.7 meters, the finger-shaft furnace in the electric steel plant has a tapping weight of 120 metric tons. It was erected by Siemens and has been in operation since 2001.

Depending on the operating mode, the furnace's dedusting system will be able to clean between 1,400,000 and 1,500,000 standard cubic meters per hour after modernization by Siemens. In addition to cutting emissions, Siemens also aims to reduce the amount of volatile organic compounds in the exhaust gas by combining efficient post-combustion with rapid downstream cooling, thus avoiding the formation of new pollutants.

For the dedusting plant of the furnace, Siemens will be supplying a post-combustion chamber including the burners and control system. Siemens is also equipping the primary exhaust gas line with a forced draught cooler, the Simetal Power Cooler.

This accelerates secondary cooling of the exhaust gases, making it considerably more efficient. Diler will also re-design the piping and the canopy, and adjust the control of the dedusting system. Siemens is providing the necessary design documentation.
