European Commission appoints Magnus Ericsson of Raw Materials Group
15.03.2013, 15:16The European Commission has appointed Professor Magnus Ericsson of Raw Materials Group (RMG) and Luleå University of Technology as rapporteur in the European Innovation Partnership (EIP) Raw Materials operational group 5, International cooperation.
The purpose of the EIP Raw Materials is “to reduce Europe’s import dependence of raw materials by improving supply conditions from EU and other sources and to make Europe a leader in exploration, extraction, processing, recycling and substitution by 2020”. The focus is on mineral raw materials together with forestry and natural rubber. The EIP will result in a strategic implementation plan (SIP) which will address all actions necessary, including R&D, legislation, licensing, standardisation, policy dialogues, training and education, and raw materials intelligence.
The appointment is recognition of RMG’s outstanding network and the company's experiences from work in Africa, Asia and in international organisations over 25 years. The role will give RMG a unique insight into this important policy formulation process, and also an opportunity to impact the outcome. RMG’s participation in the EIP follows directly upon presentation of the business plan for the African Mineral Development Center, which Professor Ericsson has managed on behalf of the African Union Commission and UN Economic Commission for Africa (UNECA).
RMG also played an important part in Polinares, contributing to the proposals for collaborative solutions for the supply of metals to Europe presented in late 2012. Polinares is a three-year EU research project that examines the global challenges facing the EU with respect to access to oil, gas and mineral resources over the next 30 years, and proposes solutions for the various policy actors.
“By this appointment, RMG strengthens its position in the crossroads between African and European mineral policy formulation processes” said Peter Rossdeutscher, CEO of IntierraRMG. RMG is the consultancy arm of IntierraRMG - the leading global mineral data and intelligence provider.
