Xingtai Iron & Steel Corp., Ltd. (Xingtai Steel), a Chinese steelmaker, accorded Siemens VAI Metals Technologies the final acceptance certificate for secondary steelmaking facilities and a four-strand continuous billet caster July 2011. The facilities are part of a new steel works in Xingtai in the Hebei Province for producing stainless and special steels.

The secondary steelmaking facilities for the Xingtai Steel steel works comprise a 50 ton AOD converter and a 50 ton ladle furnace. Siemens VAI was responsible for the engineering and the supply of key components, such as the tilting drive, valve station, rotary joint, tuyeres and hydraulic components for the AOD converter, as well as the hydraulic systems, electrode carrier arms and the high-current system, including transformers, for the ladle furnace. The scope of supply also included the basic (level 1) and process automation (level 2), including metallurgical process models for both plants.

The four-strand continuous caster is designed to cast around 200,000 tons of stainless and 150,000 tons special steels per annum. It can produce both rectangular and round billets. Siemens VAI supplied the special equipment and technology packages for this, including the LevCon mold level control, DynaFlex for the hydraulic online setting of the oscillation parameters, and DiaMold tube casting molds to support high-speed casting. Air-mist nozzles in four zones ensure optimum strand cooling. Electromagnetic coils in and under the mold ensure homogenization of the steel structure.
Within the scope of this project, Siemens Ltd. China handled the locally manufactured items, and supplied some key components for the AOD converter and the ladle furnace, as well as electrical equipment and the basic automation for the steel works.

Xingtai Steel has an annual production capacity of around three million tons of low alloy and high-carbon steels. The company is China's leading producer of high-quality special wire and bar steel, and a supplier of special steels for the automotive and other industries.
