This paper addresses the issue of ensuring accuracy during finishing of large machine parts made of steel 20 using boring bars with long reach tools. Ensuring geometric accuracy and surface quality when boring large parts with long reach tools is a pressing issue today, as this problem is typically addressed in production by either adjusting the rigidity of the boring bar system, reducing cutting conditions, or introducing an additional finishing pass into the machining operation. This typically results in reduced machining productivity and can be accompanied by significant economic losses. To address this issue, a mathematical model was developed that takes into account potential errors from all forces acting during cutting, including the deflection of the boring bar due to gravity, which in some cases can exceed the deflection due to cutting forces. This paper derives a formula for calculating the total tool deflection for a horizontal boring bar. This formula allows one to determine the maximum tool tip offset during horizontal boring and assess the potential for defects during finishing of large machine parts. To ensure the required boring accuracy, it is proposed to perform finishing of large machine parts on vertical boring machines. This will eliminate the influence of gravity on tool deflection and perform machining using cutting conditions that ensure maximum productivity without sacrificing quality.
