This paper explores the feasibility of producing proppants using drilling waste from the Urengoy oil and gas condensate field with the addition of kaolin, feldspar, and quartz sand. The chemical and phase compositions of the starting materials were determined. Model samples of five proppant compositions were synthesized, each with varying modifier content and fired at temperatures of 1000, 1100, and 1200 °C. The optimal composition was found to be composition 4-1100, fired at 1100 °C and comprising the following by weight: drill cuttings – 60%; kaolin – 20%; feldspar – 10%; and sand – 10%. Composition 4-1100 was found to have a compressive strength of 83.67 MPa and a density of 1977 kg/m3. X-ray diffraction analysis of sample 4-1100 revealed that it contained crystalline phases of quartz, orthoclase, albite, mullite, and glass phase. The developed technology facilitates the recycling of large-tonnage oil production waste, producing competitive proppants for hydraulic fracturing.
This work was supported by the Ministry of Science and Higher Education of the Russian Federation under the state assignment project “Fundamental principles of technologies for recycling waste from the oil extraction industry in the Arctic zone of the Russian Federation to produce effective construction materials and proppants” (FENN-2025-0001).
