Gornyi Zhurnal is the longest-standing periodical on mining and Earth sciences in Russia and in the world. The Journal is highly reputed among domestic specialists and is popular far beyond the borders of the country. The Journal offers both encyclopedic knowledge and news on all key points of the mining industry. In the late 20th century, the Journal faced the difficulties governed by both objective and subjective factors which led to a crisis. The periodical, and the whole country, had a bad time, which spurred it to find new approaches to performance and integration into market relations, particularly when governmental support was terminated. By the interim jubilee—the 175th anniversary—the Journal regenerated and pushed the limits, and became a more present-day version of itself. The periodical developed along a few avenues, namely: industry and corporate (biggest mines in the country); regional (individual federal districts and subjects of Russia); university (mining education and personnel training); dedicated to particular subjects (various types of ore); international (the Journal was ranked as the principal publication of the CIS Intergovernmental Council for Subsoil Exploration, Use and Protection); academic (coverage of recent theoretical and practical advances achieved by domestic institutes under auspices of the Russian Academy of Sciences). In succeeding years, integration to Russian and international data bases continued, which allowed understanding the level of achievements of science and technology in geology and mining. A new way of interaction between science and industry is shaped as an expertise and consultation approach in the form of the Technical Council for Geomechanics. The toppriority trends in academic research are identified for future publications.
