Abstract

Tenova Hyl and Danieli have united their efforts in development, marketing and erection of DRI plants using Energiron technology. Such DRI units can be supplied as modules designed for any operating steelmaking shops — from micro-mills for productivity 250,000 tpy to integrated steel works with productivity up to 2.5 mln. tpy. The paper contains analysis of usage of different reduction gases and the ways of optimization of technological process. The authors have examined carbon balance in direct reduction process, stability of high-carbon DRI and usage of fixed carbon in order to rise steelmaking efficiency. Economical features of high-carbon DRI usage were also considered. High-carbon DRI with controlled carbon levels from 2.5 to 5.0% can be produced in the Energiron ZR process. Most of the carbon in the DRI (› 90%) is in the form of Fe3C with benefits in terms of stability and additional energy input to EAF. The high-carbon DRI has important benefits in steelmaking production costs and in the overall reduction of CO2 emissions, as compared to conventional DRI. The high-carbon DRI is also an important metallic burden to BF for further reduction of coke/PCI and/or HM productivity increase.
