Chernye Metally

The section "Development of metallurgy in Russia and CIS" is presented by collection of papers devoted to the 55th anniversary of Donbass State Technical university (Alchevsk, Ukraine). This collection includes general review of the university activity and successes as well 4 technical articles on developments in ironmaking, steelmaking and section rolling achieved by the specialists of this high school.

Continuous casting is the topic theme of this issue.

S. H. Scrubbe, P. Pennerstorfer, J. Watzinger and Guoxin Shan from Siemens VAI Technologies have examined development and results of operation of a 400 mm thick slab caster. This machine of bow type with straight mould has been designed for a thickness range of 250 to 400 mm and a width range of 1,600 to 2,400 mm. It gives the customer the possibility to produce slabs with optimum quality.

Another article in this section entitled "Improved casting properties through optimized submerged entry nozzle" is prepared by the specialists of SMS Siemag AG and RHI AG companies as well as China Steel Corp. The casting platform at the continuous slab caster No. 7 is displayed. Influence of surface flow in the mould on the slab quality is examined based on relation between mean paddle deflection and standard deviation, comparatively for current design and new design. Quantitative analysis of the mould level between standard and new submerged entry nozzles for slabs 250 x 1000-1250 mm and for average casting speed 1.40-1.71 m/min is done.

The third publication in this section by G. Paulon and C. Piemonte is devoted to a new single strand slab caster at ThyssenKrupp Acciai Speciali Terni that was successfully started up in April 2009 with the first cast of AISI 304 grade in Terni plant, central Italy. The new caster is designed for a total capacity of approx. 900,000 t/a of stainless steel slabs covering the complete range of stainless grades, including AISI 300 and 400 families (austenitic, ferritic and martensitic grades).

The issue contains also the articles on rolling production, power engineering and ecology, economics and finances, education and training and metallurgical history.
