Tsvetnye Metally

The articles included in the October issue of Tsvetnye Metally are authored by members of the Department of Physical Problems of Materials Science at the National Research Nuclear University MEPhI, who present their research findings accumulated over the last years. The current issue is marking the 80th anniversary of the University and the Department, which were founded at the same time. The issue is devoted to the heritage of Boris A. Kalin, the founder and leader of a research school for almost four decades.

The issue features four articles on reactor materials, which examine the properties and behavior of zirconium alloys during heat-treatment and neutron radiation, the behavior of clad tubes with protective coatings during high-temperature oxidation; analyze the anisotropy of the physical and mechanical properties of zirconium items on the basis of their substructural inhomogeneity and crystallographic texture.

The Reactor Functional Materials section features two articles demonstrating the possibility of substituting corrosion resistant steels with vanadium alloys, which do not interact with metallic uranium-molybdenum fuel. One of the papers looks at the effect of ion beam radiation on the microstructure and porosity of dysprosium hafnate, which is aimed at predicting the reliability of absorber elements in extreme conditions.

The High-Temperature Materials section features a paper that looks at the effect of laser scanning strategy and heat treatment on the mechanical performance of a material produced from nickel alloy powder by selective laser melting.

A great interest to brazed joints and high-strength materials resulted in conducting extensive studies into rapid-quenched microcrystalline and amorphous alloys, amorphous ribbons and bulk amorphous/crystalline parts. The relevant research papers are published in the Fast-Quenched Alloys section.

The Functional Materials section describes the results of studies that looked at the structure and properties of superelastic alloys and at betavoltaic cells.
