Chernye Metally

The 10th issue of "Chernye Metally" journal (2014) is opened by with the actual metallurgical news from different countries and news of metallurgical companies.

The section "Development of metallurgy in Russia and CIS countries" is opened by the paper "Sustainable development in metallurgy" by V. P. Luzgin. Principal difference of the structure of thermal balances of basic oxygen and electric arc steelmaking processes are noted in the article. It should be also taken into account that metallurgical processes connected with large amount of CO2 greenhouse gas emissions are used as subjects of this analysis. It is shown that sustainability of these processes can be considered on the base of three "E" paradigm - Energy, Ecology and Economics.

I.G. Sarkits, Yu. A. Bokachev and E. A. Goli-Oglu displayed the paper "Production of heavy plates in the 4200-mm heavy plate mill at NLMK DanSteel". It contains technical characteristics of the new equipment at the enterprise (heat treatment walking beam furnace, 4200 rolling stand, automation systems) and description of technological capabilities of the 4 200-mm hot rolling mill in the production of hot-rolled plates of low carbon steels. Modern technologies including normalizing technology, thermo-mechanical rolling and heat treatment by normalization make it possible to produce high quality structural steel that is used for shipbuilding, machinery, bridge construction, pressure vessels, boilers, wind turbines and offshore structures.

J. Sauerwald, A. Franzen, A. Fischer, T. Buhles and J. Janz fro ArcelorMittal Bremen GmbH observed in their publication investigation of coke network and cohesive zone by muon tomography. In a new approach the coke network and the cohesive zone are investigated during reduction process by muon tomography. The presented results show that measurements of the density distribution in the lower part of a blast furnace are possible and can help to monitor the position and shape of the cohesive zone for a stabilization of the blast furnace process.

A. M. Wisse (Tata Steel Europe) in his article "Implementation of bag filters at the Tata Steel IJmujden sinter plant" describes the execution and implementation of projects in existing plants and organizations. It is concluded that the project implementation was excellent, mounting works at the site we restricted due to delivery of the new units as large-size components. The new dedusting system and waste gas cleaning unit provide correspondingly cutting dust emissions by 90 % and 85 %.

In the section "Rolling" the paper "Optimization of final plate flatness by set-up coordination for subsequent manufacturing process" is presented by the group of specialists from several European research and production companies (VDEh-Betriebsforschungsinstitut GmbH, ArcelorMittal España SA, Tata UK Ltd., Swerea Mefos, Rautaruukki Oyi and ThyssenKrupp Steel Europe AG. The aim of this project was the development and implementation of the “Global Throughprocess Flatness Predictor and Coordinated Optimizer”. This system should integrate all sub-models including models of transfer conditions from process stage to process stage and perform a line-through process flatness prediction.

H.-P. Schmidt from Messer Group GmbH in his publication "Low-temperature processing providing hardness and precision of the component". stated that transformation of residual austenite has been occurred practically completely in the material after quenching in order to get wear-resistant components with stable form. This step can be considered as a decisive one to provide steel quality, if we consider hardness and service life of cutting tools or precision of outline dimensions of casting forms. stated that transformation of residual austenite has been occurred practically completely in the material after quenching in order to get wear-resistant components with stable form. Other publications in this issue are devoted to lightweight potential of automotive steel bodies, to cadaster of working places depending on workload, to historical dates of metallurgical production.
