Mechanical sciences and Imperial Academy of Arts

V. Yu. Matveev

The book is devoted to one of the least discussed questions in the history of the Imperial Academy of Arts — the activity of the classes of the «mastery of doing the mathematical instruments» and the classes of the watch-maker. These classes existed in the XVIII century.

The researchings of the materials, which are connected with the history of these two classes of the Academy of Arts allow to prove the thesis about the appropriateness of their appearence in the structure of Academy, in compliance with the philosophical and aesthetic guidelines of the Age of Enlightenment. This, by-turn, allows to imagine the accents in the views on the reasons of occurance of not only the instrument making, but also the other classes of the «different masteries». This publication holds the artistic analysis of the scientific instruments and clocks, estimates their role in the formation of the classicism interiors. Also, in close relationship with the history of the classes, there is considered the activity of the Dubrovno and Kupavna clock factories, the Panopticon Institute, an instrumental institution near the Izhora plants.

Ths book is recommended to everyone, who is interested in the history of Russian Academy of arts, the history of the instrument making and the clock production, artistic and technical education in Russia in the second half of the XVIII century.
